Ben stokes reveals his future plans

England Test captain Ben Stokes has revealed he has no plans to reverse his decision to retire from ODI cricket and play at this year ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 and will instead use the time out of the game to consider surgery for his ongoing knee injury.

No World Cup for Stokes as England captain ponders next step for knee.

Stokes helped England to success at last year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia and many hoped the 32-year-old would come out of ODI retirement to help his country try and emulate their efforts in the shortest format and defend their 50-over World Cup title in India.

But Stokes said he remains retired from 50-over cricket and that he was looking forward to taking a break after the fifth and final Ashes Test at The Oval that commences on Thursday.

“I’m retired,” Stokes reiterated.

“I’m going on holiday after this game and that’s as far as I’m thinking.”

Stokes was the obvious replacement for Root and was officially unveiled as his successor last week. The pair are close friends and Stokes paid tribute to Root after he was appointed captain, saying: “He has been a massive part of my development as a leader in the dressing room, and he will continue to be a key ally for me in this role.”
